How long does it take to learn Italian?
The US Foreign Service Institute estimates about 24 weeks of full-time classes (600 class hours) for English speakers to reach professional working proficiency. Basic travel conversation comes much earlier with regular speaking practice.
Is Italian easier than Spanish?
FSI rates both as Category I, the easiest group for English speakers, and lists Italian at 24 weeks versus 30 for Spanish. In practice, the language you practise more often will feel easier.
Which Italian certificate should I take?
CILS (Università per Stranieri di Siena), CELI (Università per Stranieri di Perugia) and PLIDA (Società Dante Alighieri) are the main ones. Check which one your university or citizenship application accepts.
Can I learn Italian for my family roots online?
Yes. Tell your tutor it is for family conversations, and ask to work on the topics you will actually discuss with relatives.
