How long does it take to learn Korean?
The US Foreign Service Institute estimates about 88 weeks of full-time classes (2,200 class hours) for English speakers to reach professional working proficiency. With one or two lessons a week, simple conversations come in months, fluency in years.
Is Korean hard for English speakers?
The alphabet is easy; the rest is hard. FSI puts Korean in Category IV, its hardest group, because of word order, particles, speech levels and vocabulary with few English cognates.
What is the TOPIK?
The Test of Proficiency in Korean, run by NIIED for the Korean government. TOPIK I rates levels 1 and 2, TOPIK II levels 3 to 6. Korean universities and some visas ask for a TOPIK level.
Can I learn Korean from K-dramas?
Dramas train your ear and give you motivation, but they rarely get you speaking. Pair them with a tutor who turns the lines you like into conversation practice and explains the speech level each character uses.
Can I learn Korean online with a private tutor?
