Preply vs Cambly comes down to what you buy: Cambly sells a weekly allowance of 30-minute conversations with native English speakers, while Preply sells lessons with one tutor you choose and keep. If you use English at work and freeze when you have to speak, both can help, but they suit different weeks and different goals.
The plan rules below come from the two help centers, and Cambly's prices from its own pricing page, checked on 9 October 2026 from Europe (Cambly shows prices in your local currency).
How do Cambly and Preply sell English lessons?
Cambly sells time: you subscribe to a number of 30-minute lessons per week, and the minutes can go to any tutor who is online or to a booked slot. Preply sells a relationship: after a paid trial, you subscribe to one tutor's lessons, 25 or 50 minutes long, billed every 28 days. Cambly is English only; Preply covers dozens of languages.
| Cambly | Preply | |
|---|---|---|
| Languages | English only | English, Spanish, French, Italian and many more |
| Tutors | 100% native English speakers | Native and non-native, you filter |
| Lesson length | 30 minutes | 25 or 50 minutes |
| How you pay | Weekly lessons on a monthly, 3-month or yearly plan | Plan with one tutor, at least 4 lessons per 28-day cycle |
| Price set by | Cambly (one price per plan) | Each tutor |
| Trial | $1 for 30 minutes | Paid at the tutor's rate, up to 2 free replacements |
| Unused time | Expires every Monday | Unscheduled lessons expire at renewal |
| Instant lesson | Yes, call a tutor who is online | No, you book a slot |
| Best for | Frequent short practice, odd hours | One tutor, a goal, a fixed weekly slot |
The table says one thing clearly: Cambly is built for volume of speaking, Preply for continuity with one person.
Is Cambly cheaper than Preply per hour of English?
Cambly is cheaper than Preply per hour on a yearly plan, and close to it on monthly billing. On 9 October 2026, Cambly's Private+ plan (2 lessons a week) cost €17.25 per 30-minute lesson monthly, which is €34.50 an hour. Preply English tutors in our sample had a median of €36.50 per 50-minute lesson, about €43.80 an hour.
Comparing per lesson is a trap, because a Cambly lesson lasts 30 minutes and a standard Preply lesson 50. Here are the prices converted to one hour of speaking.
| Option (checked October 2026) | Price shown | Price per hour |
|---|---|---|
| Cambly Small groups, monthly | €8.00 per 30 min | €16.00 |
| Cambly Private+, monthly | €17.25 per 30 min | €34.50 |
| Cambly Private+, yearly | €11.15 per 30 min | €22.30 |
| Cambly Pro, monthly | €21.25 per 30 min | €42.50 |
| Preply English, median of first 10 tutors listed | €36.50 per 50 min | €43.80 |
| Preply English, cheapest of those 10 | €20 per 50 min | €24.00 |
Cambly prices come from its pricing page with 2 lessons a week selected (9 October 2026); Preply prices come from our Preply prices and fees guide, sampled on 7 October 2026. Preply adds a processing fee and taxes at checkout. Cambly's yearly price is a commitment: its refund policy says that if you cancel early, the discount is forfeited and the days you used are charged at the monthly rate.
The verdict on price: a yearly Cambly Private+ plan beats most Preply tutors per hour, but only if you are sure you will keep speaking for 12 months.
Why does Cambly suit learners who need more speaking time?
Cambly suits learners who need more speaking time because it removes the planning. You can press "I'm ready" and call a tutor who is online, or book a slot, and every lesson is a conversation with a native speaker. Lesson recordings and transcripts come with the Private+ and Pro plans, which helps you spot the mistakes you repeat.
How does Cambly's weekly minute allowance work?
Cambly's plan gives you a set number of minutes each week. According to Cambly's help center, minutes refresh every Monday at 3:00 AM in your time zone, and unused minutes from the previous week expire. You can use up to 60 minutes in a single day, and private and group lessons draw from the same balance. If you run out, you can buy extra minutes.
What are Cambly's real limits?
Cambly's biggest limit is the weekly reset: a busy week costs you the minutes you didn't use, with no carry-over. The second limit is the format. A 30-minute talk with whoever is online is great practice, but a different tutor each time can't follow your progress. You can pick favorite tutors, though popular ones fill up.
The third limit: Cambly teaches English only, so a family that also wants Spanish lessons for the kids will need a second platform.

Why does Preply suit English learners with a goal?
Preply suits English learners with a goal because you choose one tutor for that goal and keep them. A tutor who knows your job, your accent and your usual mistakes can prepare a meeting, an interview or an exam with you, week after week. You book fixed slots, and lessons last 25 or 50 minutes.
What has Preply been like for me?
I take English lessons on Preply with my tutor Ken, since early August 2026: 50-minute lessons, 12 hours a month, about €34 an hour, so roughly €408 a month (September 2026). My level is B1 and I'm aiming for B2+. My reading and listening were fine; speaking was the problem. I progressed fast, and I put that down to speaking for most of every lesson. I found Preply simple to pick up: finding a tutor, booking, joining. Between lessons, I practise out loud with ChatGPT in voice mode during the morning traffic.
What are Preply's real limits next to Cambly?
Preply's main limit next to Cambly is flexibility. There is no instant lesson: you book a slot with your tutor. The trial is paid at the tutor's rate, against $1 on Cambly. You can't buy a single lesson after the trial, and unscheduled lessons expire at renewal, so book the whole 28-day cycle early. A cancellation under 12 hours usually means the lesson is lost, where Cambly still gives half of your minutes back.
Preply vs Cambly: which rules cost you money?
The rules that cost money on Preply and Cambly are the ones about time you don't use. Each platform has two or three, and they are worth reading before you pay.
- Cambly: unused minutes vanish every Monday, so a plan of 5 lessons a week is wasted money if you only manage 3.
- Cambly: cancelling a yearly plan early means paying the monthly rate for the days used.
- Cambly: the 7-day money-back guarantee on your first plan is the safety net, even after lessons.
- Preply: unscheduled lessons expire at the 28-day renewal, while booked lessons are kept.
- Preply: one subscription covers one tutor, so two tutors means two plans.
- Preply: up to 2 free replacement trials if the first tutor isn't a fit.
If you work full time, our page for people learning a language for work explains how to rehearse real meetings in your lessons, and our guide to English phrases for video calls gives you material for the first session on either platform.

Should you choose Preply or Cambly for your situation?
Choose Cambly if you want frequent, short conversations with native speakers and your schedule changes every day. Choose Preply if you want one tutor working on a specific goal, or a language other than English. Skip both for now if you can't give English at least one lesson a week: a free conversation exchange will do more than an unused plan.
- Pick Cambly if you can speak 15 to 30 minutes on most days, at unpredictable hours.
- Pick Cambly's yearly plan only after a month on monthly billing proves you use your minutes.
- Pick Preply if you prepare a job interview, a promotion, a move abroad or an exam, and want a tutor who tracks your progress.
- Pick Preply if you want to choose your tutor's price, background or accent, or a non-native tutor who explains grammar.
The Preply review covers the platform in more detail, and the Preply and italki comparison helps if you want pay-as-you-go lessons instead. Not sure of your level before the first lesson? The level quiz takes two minutes. You'll find more English guides on our English learning hub.
Questions people ask about Preply and Cambly
Is Cambly cheaper than Preply?
Per hour, Cambly is often cheaper on a yearly plan and close to Preply on a monthly one. On 9 October 2026, a Cambly Private+ lesson cost €17.25 per 30 minutes on monthly billing, or €34.50 an hour. Preply English tutors in our 7 October sample had a median of €36.50 per 50 minutes, about €43.80 an hour, with cheaper tutors available.
Are all Cambly tutors native English speakers?
Yes. Cambly's plan pages describe its tutors as 100% native English speakers, on all three plans. Preply lists both native and non-native English tutors, and you can filter by native speaker. A non-native tutor who learned English as an adult can be a good fit if you need grammar explained.
Does Cambly have a free trial?
Cambly's help center describes a $1 trial lesson of 30 minutes with a native-speaking tutor (checked October 2026). Cambly also offers a 7-day money-back guarantee on your first plan, even if you have taken lessons. Preply's trial is paid at the tutor's rate, with up to 2 free replacement trials.
What happens to unused minutes on Cambly?
Unused Cambly minutes expire every week. The help center says minutes refresh every Monday at 3:00 AM local time, and minutes left from the previous week don't carry over. Preply is more forgiving on timing: unscheduled lessons expire only at the end of the 28-day cycle.
Can I learn Spanish or French on Cambly?
No. Cambly teaches English only. Preply has tutors for Spanish, French, Italian and many other languages, so it is the one to use if you want a second language or a tutor for your kids in another language.
Can I cancel a Cambly lesson at the last minute?
You lose half of the time. Cambly gives all your minutes back if you cancel more than 12 hours before the lesson, and half of them if you cancel later but before the start. On Preply, a cancellation under 12 hours usually means the lesson is lost.
Which is better for IELTS or a job interview?
Preply fits exam and interview prep better, because you can pick a tutor who lists IELTS or interview coaching and keep them for weeks. Cambly's Pro plan adds structured, goal-oriented lessons with Pro tutors, so it is an option if you prefer Cambly's format.
