How much does Preply cost? Most learners pay €20 to €45 for a 50-minute lesson, with a minimum of 4 lessons per 28-day cycle, plus a processing fee and taxes. If you pay for lessons yourself and want to know the monthly bill before booking a trial, this page gives the real prices we saw on Preply's listings, the fees, and the rules that make you lose money.
Every rule comes from the Preply Help Center, checked on 7 October 2026. Prices come from Preply's own tutor listings on the same day, seen from Europe, so they show in euros.
What do Preply tutors actually charge per lesson?
Preply tutors set their own prices, so the cost per lesson varies by tutor, language and country. On 7 October 2026, the first 10 tutors Preply showed us for each language charged €20 to €89 per 50-minute lesson, with medians between €31 and €36.50. Preply's own averages per hour are lower, at $22 to $34.
| Language | Preply average, native tutors | Preply average, non-native | First 10 tutors listed (50 min) | Median of those 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | $26/hr | $22/hr | €20 to €89 | €36.50 |
| Spanish | $27/hr | $25/hr | €22 to €53 | €31 |
| French | $34/hr | $25/hr | €21 to €45 | €31 |
| Italian | $30/hr | $31/hr | €20 to €45 | €35 |
Verdict: budget about €30 to €35 per lesson for a tutor near the top of Preply's default list, and use the price filter if you want to stay near Preply's averages.
Why the gap? The first profiles in Preply's default order tend to be busy, experienced tutors, and their rates sit above the average. The same pages say Spanish and French lessons start from $3 and Italian from $4, so cheaper tutors exist further down the list. How does Preply's subscription pricing work?
Preply's pricing is a subscription with one tutor, billed every 28 days. You pick how many lessons you want per week, and Preply charges that plan up front for the cycle. The minimum is 4 lessons per cycle. Your renewal date is fixed from the day you subscribed, whatever number of lessons you took.
The Help Center's own example shows how the price builds up: if your tutor charges €10 per lesson, the minimum plan costs €40 per cycle for 4 lessons of 50 minutes. Switching to 25-minute sessions doesn't lower the bill: you still pay €40, spread over more, shorter lessons.
A few rules change what you pay over a month:
- You can change the number of lessons or their length at any time.
- You can buy extra lessons as a top-up when you run out mid-cycle.
- Your tutor can't raise your rate without your approval.
- You can pause once per cycle, for up to 20 days.
- Cancelling the subscription must be done at least 1 day before the next billing date.
- Each subscription covers one tutor, so two tutors means two subscriptions.
What does a month of Preply cost at one or two lessons a week?
A month of Preply costs four times the lesson price at one lesson a week, and eight times at two, before the fee and taxes. With the medians from our sample, that is €124 to €146 per cycle for one weekly lesson and €248 to €292 for two.
| Plan per 28-day cycle | Spanish or French (€31) | Italian (€35) | English (€36.50) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lesson a week (4 lessons) | €124 | €140 | €146 |
| 2 lessons a week (8 lessons) | €248 | €280 | €292 |
| 3 lessons a week (12 lessons) | €372 | €420 | €438 |
| Per year at 1 lesson a week (13 cycles) | €1,612 | €1,820 | €1,898 |
Verdict: one weekly lesson with a typical tutor from the top of the list costs about €1,600 to €1,900 a year, so pick the number of lessons before you pick the tutor.
A 28-day cycle means 13 charges a year, not 12. That isn't a hidden fee (you get 13 cycles of lessons), but it makes a "monthly" budget about 8% higher than a calendar-month estimate.
How much do I pay for Preply lessons?
I take English lessons on Preply with my tutor, Ken: 12 hours a month in 50-minute lessons, about 3 hours a week. I pay about €34 an hour, roughly €408 a month (September 2026). That is an intensive pace, and the rate sits close to the medians in the table above.

What I get for that price is speaking time. My reading and listening were already fine at B1; my problem was talking out loud. I progressed quickly, and I put it down to speaking for most of every lesson. Between lessons I practise for free with ChatGPT's voice mode in the morning traffic, which lets me keep the paid hours for corrections. The full story is in our Preply review.
Which Preply fees come on top of the lesson price?
Preply adds a processing fee and taxes to the lesson price, and nothing else. The Help Center lists three parts in the checkout total: the lesson plan or extra lessons, a processing fee shown before payment, and taxes based on your location. The fee and taxes show together as one "Taxes & Fees" line.
Preply doesn't publish the processing fee as a fixed percentage, so read the checkout total rather than a figure quoted by a third-party site. Some guides mention a paid Preply membership or a one-off fee on your first lesson; the Help Center pages on charges and subscriptions describe neither.
Two more costs can appear outside Preply. Preply processes payments in USD, EUR or GBP, and other currencies on the site are only indicative, so your bank may add a conversion or international transaction fee. And VAT, or the local equivalent, is applied according to where you live.
How much does a Preply trial lesson cost?
A Preply trial lesson costs the tutor's own price, for 25 or 50 minutes, and you pay it at booking. Each tutor offers one trial per student. If the trial doesn't fit, Preply gives each account up to 2 free replacement trials with other tutors, as a 100% discount code you request through support once the trial is marked "Paid".
One detail explains why trials are often good lessons: according to Preply's commission page for tutors, Preply keeps 100% of every trial with a new student. The tutor is paid only if you subscribe, so the trial is their pitch. Replacements stop once you subscribe to a tutor.
Where does Preply cost more than it should?
Preply costs more than it should when lessons go unused. Unscheduled lessons expire at the renewal date and don't carry over, and a lesson cancelled or moved less than 12 hours before it starts doesn't return to your balance: the tutor is paid for the slot.

These are the habits that keep the price per lesson you actually take close to the price you pay:
- Book every lesson of the cycle on the day it renews. Booked lessons are kept even if they fall after renewal.
- Lower the number of lessons before a busy month instead of after it.
- Use the pause (once per cycle, up to 20 days) for holidays.
- Move lessons more than 12 hours ahead, never on the morning itself.
- Stay with one tutor unless you really need two subscriptions.
Preply's main limit on price is that you can't buy a single lesson, even through support. If you want only two or three lessons, for example a mock oral before an exam, skip Preply: a pay-per-lesson platform fits better, as we explain in Preply vs italki for your budget.
Is Preply worth the cost for your goal?
Preply is worth the cost when you will take at least one lesson every week for several months and want to speak, because the subscription only pays off when every lesson gets used. It is poor value for irregular learners, for anyone who wants a fixed course book, and for people who can't protect a weekly slot.
If you learn for your job, ask your employer before paying yourself: our page for people learning a language for work shows how to rehearse the meetings and calls you'll face. If you are budgeting for Spanish, our guide to finding an online Spanish tutor compares Preply's prices with italki and Wyzant. Not sure what level to tell the tutor? The level quiz takes two minutes.
Questions people ask about Preply prices
Is Preply free to join?
Yes. Creating an account and browsing tutors costs nothing, and Preply's Help Center describes no membership fee. You start paying when you book a trial lesson, which is charged at booking, and then when you subscribe to a tutor's lesson plan.
How much is a Preply trial lesson?
A Preply trial lesson costs whatever that tutor charges, for 25 or 50 minutes. The trial is paid. If it doesn't fit, each account can get up to 2 free replacement trials with other tutors, as a 100% discount code requested through support.
Does Preply charge a fee on top of the lesson price?
Yes. Preply's Help Center says your checkout total is the lesson plan, plus a processing fee shown before you pay, plus taxes based on your location. The fee and taxes appear together as one 'Taxes & Fees' line, and you are never charged more than the checkout total.
Can you pay for Preply lessons one at a time?
No. After the trial, Preply sells lessons through a subscription with one tutor, starting at 4 lessons per 28-day cycle. You can buy extra lessons as a top-up mid-cycle, but there is no standalone pay-per-lesson option.
Are 25-minute lessons cheaper on Preply?
Not per cycle. Preply's own example: a €10 tutor's minimum plan costs €40 for 4 lessons of 50 minutes, and switching to 25-minute sessions still costs €40. You get more, shorter lessons for the same money.
Why is Preply cheaper in some countries?
Prices are set by each tutor, and Preply's averages differ by the tutor's country. On its Spanish page (checked October 2026), tutors from Colombia and Venezuela average $25 an hour against $30 for Spain. Preply charges in USD, EUR or GBP; other currencies shown are indicative.
