A Superprof Spanish tutor costs about the same per hour as a Spanish tutor on Preply, around $25, but Superprof adds a $49 monthly Student Pass just to contact tutors, while Preply charges nothing to join and sells lessons in 28-day plans. If you're hiring a private Spanish tutor with your own money, the access fee and the payment rules change the bill more than the hourly rate does.
Every figure below comes from the two platforms' own pages, checked on 8 October 2026.
How do Superprof and Preply charge for a Spanish tutor?
Superprof and Preply both let Spanish tutors set their own price, but they charge you in opposite ways. Superprof sells access: a Student Pass that lets you message every tutor, after which you arrange and pay lessons directly with the tutor. Preply sells lessons: a paid trial, then a plan with one tutor, billed every 28 days through the platform.
| Rule (checked 8 October 2026) | Superprof | Preply |
|---|---|---|
| Fee to contact tutors | Student Pass, $49 a month in the US | None |
| First lesson | Free with 90% of online Spanish tutors | Paid trial of 25 or 50 minutes |
| Average online Spanish rate | $25 an hour | $27 an hour (native tutors), $25 (non-native) |
| How lessons are paid | Arranged between you and the tutor | Plan with one tutor, every 28 days, from 4 lessons |
| Lesson format | Online or in person | Online only |
| Cancelling a lesson | Agreed with each tutor | Free up to 12 hours before the lesson |
| Average reply time shown | 3 hours | 1 hour |
Verdict: Superprof's rules depend on the tutor you pick, Preply's are the same for every tutor, and that matters most the day a lesson goes wrong.
What does a Superprof Spanish tutor cost over a year?
A Superprof Spanish tutor at $25 an hour costs about $1,324 for a year of weekly lessons if you cancel the Student Pass after the first month, and about $1,863 if the pass keeps renewing. The same weekly rhythm on Preply with a $25 tutor comes to about $1,325, plus a processing fee and taxes shown at checkout.
The math, for one lesson a week and a tutor charging $25 on each site:
- Superprof, pass cancelled after one month: $49 + 51 paid lessons (the first one free) = $1,324.
- Superprof, pass left running: $588 for 12 months of pass + $1,275 of lessons = $1,863.
- Preply: one paid trial ($25) + 13 cycles of 4 lessons ($1,300) = $1,325, before fees and taxes.
Lesson length tilts it a little. Superprof rates are per hour, while a standard Preply lesson lasts 50 minutes, so at the same price Superprof gives you 10 more minutes. Preply's 28-day cycle also means 13 charges a year, not 12. Our breakdown of Preply's prices and fees shows the rest of the bill.

Is the Superprof free first lesson better than a Preply trial?
The Superprof free first lesson is cheaper on paper, but you pay $49 for the pass before you can book it, and the pass covers as many free first lessons as you can fit in a month. A Preply trial is paid at the tutor's rate, and Preply gives each account up to 2 free replacement trials if the first tutor isn't a fit.
So the free lesson wins if you plan to try three or four Spanish tutors in the same month. It loses if the first tutor you contact is the right one, because then the pass costs more than a single Preply trial. Superprof's own guide advises shortlisting tutors before you subscribe, then cancelling once you no longer need to contact anyone. That advice holds: never start the pass to browse.
Whatever the platform, use the first lesson the same way. Ask for a five-minute role-play from your week (ordering, a call with a landlord, a meeting) and count how long you speak. Our guide to finding a Spanish tutor online has a five-point trial checklist.
When is Superprof the better choice for Spanish lessons?
Superprof is the better choice for Spanish lessons when you want a tutor in person, or when you need a few lessons in a short window and nothing after. Preply doesn't offer in-person lessons at all, and its smallest plan keeps renewing every 28 days until you cancel or pause it.
Superprof fits these cases:
- You live in a US city with Spanish tutors nearby and learn better face to face. Superprof says online classes there cost on average 20% more than in-person ones.
- Your child or partner wants lessons too, in another subject: the same pass covers every subject.
- You need four or five lessons before a trip and will cancel the pass right after.
- You're moving abroad and want to keep the same tutor in person once you arrive.
Skip Superprof if you want the platform to handle payment and cancellations. With lessons paid directly to the tutor, a missed or disputed lesson is settled between you and that tutor.
What are the downsides of Preply for a Spanish tutor?
Preply's main downsides for a Spanish tutor are the paid trial, the renewing 28-day plan, and lessons that expire if you don't schedule them before renewal. One plan covers one tutor, so trying a second tutor for conversation means a second plan.
My own lessons are on Preply: English with my tutor Ken, 50 minutes each, 12 hours a month at about €34 an hour. I find it simple to book and join lessons, and the fixed weekly slot is what keeps me going. That rhythm is also the condition: Preply suits you if you book the same slot every week, and punishes skipped weeks. Questions people ask about Superprof and Preply for Spanish
How much is the Superprof Student Pass?
Superprof's own guide puts the Student Pass at $49 a month in the US (checked October 2026). The pass lets you contact as many tutors as you like. It does not include any lesson: you pay each tutor their own rate, and the pass renews every month until you cancel it from your account.
Is the first lesson on Superprof really free?
Often, yes. Superprof's online Spanish page says 90% of its tutors offer the first lesson for free (checked 8 October 2026). You still need an active Student Pass to contact the tutor, so the free lesson costs you at least one month of the pass.
Is Superprof cheaper than Preply for Spanish lessons?
Per hour, the two are close: Superprof shows an average of $25 an hour for online Spanish, Preply $25 to $27. Superprof becomes more expensive when you keep the $49 Student Pass running month after month. Preply adds a processing fee and taxes at checkout instead.
Can I take in-person Spanish lessons on Preply?
No. Preply lessons happen online, in its own video classroom. Superprof lists both online and in-person tutors, and its Spanish page says online classes cost on average 20% more than face-to-face ones. If you want a tutor in your city, Superprof is the one to check.
Can I cancel the Superprof Student Pass at any time?
Yes. Superprof says you can manage or cancel the pass at any time from your account, and it renews monthly until you do. Cancel it once you have found your tutor, unless you plan to contact new tutors the following month.
