How to find a good online Spanish tutor (and what it costs)

A good Spanish tutor online makes you speak for most of the lesson, corrects you as you go, and teaches the Spanish of the place where you'll use it. Expect to pay about $25 to $31 an hour on Preply (checked 29 September 2026), then judge the tutor on one trial lesson, not on the profile.

This guide is for adults paying out of their own pocket: for work, an exam, a move or a trip. Prices and rules come from the platforms' own pages and help centers.

Where can you find a private Spanish tutor online?

Three marketplaces come up first when you search for a Spanish tutor from the US: Preply, italki and Wyzant. All three let tutors set their own prices. They differ on how you pay, what happens after a bad first lesson, and how late you can cancel, and those rules decide your real cost more than the hourly rate.

Verdict: Preply fits a steady weekly habit, italki fits an irregular calendar, and Wyzant fits US learners who want to pay only after each lesson and may want to meet in person later.

How much do private Spanish lessons cost per month?

Private Spanish lessons cost about $100 to $250 a month for most learners, at one or two lessons a week. Preply's Spanish page gives an average of $28 an hour for native speakers and $25 for non-native tutors, and varies by the tutor's country (checked 29 September 2026).

Verdict: the gap between a tutor from Venezuela and one from Spain is about $6 an hour, so choose the accent first and the price second.

Those are averages. The same page says rates start at $3, and italki lists $4 to $60 an hour for its Spanish teachers. Individual prices can also show in your local currency: from Europe, the first Spanish tutors on Preply's page ranged from €25 to €40 per lesson on the day we checked.

What does a year of Spanish tutoring cost?

A year of Spanish tutoring with a $28 lesson costs $1,456 at one lesson a week on Preply and $2,912 at two, before fees and taxes. Preply bills every 28 days, so a year has 13 cycles, not 12. The table below uses the same round price on each platform to show the effect of billing.

Verdict: at the same price, the platforms cost the same if you never skip a week; pay-per-lesson wins as soon as you take breaks, unless you pause your Preply plan (once per cycle, up to 20 days).

For scale, my own budget: I take English lessons on Preply with my tutor Ken, 12 hours a month in 50-minute lessons, at about €34 an hour, roughly €408 a month (September 2026). That is a heavy pace. Most people learning Spanish around a job start at two lessons a week, as in our routine for learning Spanish fast with a job.

Spain or Latin America: which Spanish tutor accent should you pick?

Pick a Spanish tutor from the region where you'll use the language. If you're moving to Madrid, a tutor from Spain; if your coworkers or patients are Mexican, a tutor from Mexico. Both varieties are standard Spanish, and speakers from each region understand the other without trouble.

The differences you'll notice in the first lessons:

• Plural "you": Spain uses vosotros in informal speech (¿Vosotros habláis inglés?), Latin America uses ustedes for everyone (¿Ustedes hablan inglés?).
• Pronunciation: in most of Spain, z and soft c sound like the English "th"; in Latin America, they sound like s.
• Everyday words: ordenador (Spain) or computadora (most of Latin America) for a computer, coche or carro for a car.
• In Argentina and Uruguay, many people say vos instead of tú, with its own verb forms (vos tenés for tú tienes).

How do you test a Spanish tutor in one trial lesson?

Test a Spanish tutor by asking for a role-play from your real life in the trial and counting how long you speak. Preply trials last 25 or 50 minutes, and if the first tutor isn't a fit, Preply's Help Center gives each account up to 2 free replacement trials with other tutors (checked September 2026).

Send one sentence before the trial: your goal, your level, your deadline. Then check these points during the lesson:

1. Did the tutor ask about your goal in the first 5 minutes, instead of starting a generic textbook?
2. Did you speak for at least half of the lesson?
3. Did the tutor correct you, with the right form written in the chat, without stopping every sentence?
4. Did the tutor adapt their speed so you understood most of it?
5. Did you leave with a plan for the next 4 lessons?

How many hours with a Spanish tutor does it take to speak?

Speaking Spanish with confidence takes hundreds of hours, and a Spanish tutor covers only part of them. The US Foreign Service Institute puts Spanish at 30 weeks of full-time classes, about 750 class hours, for English-speaking diplomats to reach professional working level (FSI, state.gov).

Two hours a week with a tutor will not get you there alone. What the tutor does is make the practice count: you speak, you get corrected, and you know what to review. The rest comes from listening, reading and practice between lessons.

That matches what worked for me in English. My passive English was already good, but I couldn't express myself out loud. I progressed quickly on Preply, and I put that down to speaking for most of every lesson. Between lessons, I practise out loud with ChatGPT's voice mode in the morning traffic. The same approach works for Spanish.

When is a private Spanish tutor not worth it?

A private Spanish tutor is not worth it if you can't protect at least one lesson a week. Below that, you spend each lesson reviewing the previous one, and a free app plus a weekly conversation exchange will do more for your money.

Private tutoring also has limits worth knowing before you pay:

• Quality depends on the tutor you pick, not on the platform: a 4.9 rating says little about whether the tutor fits your goal.
• Preply's plan renews every 28 days, and lessons you haven't scheduled by the renewal date expire.
• On Preply, one plan covers one tutor. Two tutors mean two plans.
